PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a Portsmouth sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot herself outside city hall Wednesday.
Police Detective Misty Holley said the deputy shot herself in the leg, around 4:30 p.m. She said the injury was not life-threatening, but she was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
Cpt. Lee Cherry, with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office, said the deputy was getting into her vehicle and putting her weapon back in its holster, when she mishandled the gun and it fired. He said the injury was to her right thigh.
The scene is located near the intersection of Columbia and Crawford streets, in Olde Towne.
