40 Portsmouth school bus drivers call out sick

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Several parents in Portsmouth tell WAVY.com their kids were not picked up by city school buses Monday morning, left out in the cold for hours with no knowledge of what was happening.

Portsmouth Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Chris Steele told WAVY.com an abnormal amount of school bus drivers called out sick Monday morning. According to Steele — about 40, which is more than double the normal absentee rate.

Steele said the school system notified schools and sent out a Connect 5 robocall to parents letting them know. He said buses made double runs and they sent out substitute drivers to pick up students.The following is a transcript of the message sent to parents via phone Monday morning:
