Sometimes, when I come across a story about a chemical spill or environmental disaster in West Virginia, my thoughts lead me to story of the Greek Titan Prometheus. In Greek Mythology, Prometheus was humanity’s architect and benefactor. He was the Titan entrusted by the gods to fashion mankind out of clay and, once he had sculpted us, he was the one who stole fire from the Gods so that we mighty have it. As punishment, Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock on the face of a mountain and had an eagle swoop down and tear out his liver, not to kill him, but to make him suffer. By the time morning came around, Prometheus’s liver would have regenerated and he would endure the same fate that day as he had the last.

I only mention this because the misfortune and tragedy that befalls many West Virginians on a regular basis…
